Spring Sing 2008… The Hinsdale South Department of Music is presenting “Spring Sing 2008” on Thursday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. General Admission seating is $2 or free with Booster Club Pass. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Purple Heart of Valor On Monday, May 5, the Darien Town Council presented Detective Michael Campo with the Darien Police Department’s Purple Heart of Valor Medal.  Congratulations Detective Campo!

National Language Honor Societies Induction… The Hinsdale South High School induction ceremony of the National Language Honor Societies of the American Associations of Teachers of Spanish and German, and the American Classical League will be held on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00 PM in the Little Theater at Hinsdale South High School.  At this ceremony Trilingual Scholars will also be inducted.  Membership in these highly selective honor societies is based on scholarship in general, scholarship in the language, achievement on language national exams, leadership in language activities, and a personal interest in all things Spanish, French, German, and Latin. A future issue of this weekly news update will carry the names of students inducted.

Breakfast Club Award Winners… The Hinsdale South Administration hosted a breakfast on Thursday, May 8 to honor students who have been selected for special recognition during the fourth quarter in the Breakfast Club program. These students are selected by academic departments as well as areas of service within the school for outstanding efforts, leadership, or goal-attainment. Recognized at the March Breakfast Club were Michael Horvath, Activities; Danish Younus, Art; Jessica Carlson, Athletics; Jason Wroda, Business; Reynaldo Neris, DHH; Michael Carr, Educational Services; Merin Nadupparambil, English; Cera Forlani and Michael Garcia, Family and Consumer Sciences; Melissa Giese, Foreign Language; Jacquelyn Fortin, Guidance; Nicholas Lohenis, Math; Phil Kagan, Music; Melissa Lawrence, Physical Education; Dan Evangelist, Science; Justine Bzowski, Social Studies; Kelly Nelson, Student Center; and Paul Baldwin, Technical Education.

FCCLA Members Medal in Springfield… Seven Hinsdale South students competed in the Family Career Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference in April. Please congratulate the following students on their awards: Rachel Acosta and Cecilia Portillo earned Gold Medals, and David Dominguez and Anna Whaley received Silver Medals in the Cookie Decorating Competition; Brittany Williams and Julieanne Kerstein competed in Cake Decorating and received Silver Medals, and Jennifer Galicia was awarded a Silver Medal in Fashion Apparel Display.

Hinsdale South Foundation Seeks Hall of Fame Nominations… The Hinsdale South Foundation is seeking nominations for their annual Hall of Fame Induction which will take place in the fall, 2008.   The Hall of Fame recognizes select individuals who are graduates or retired staff of Hinsdale South High School.  Nominated alumni have made significant contributions to their profession, to their community or to society in general.  Nominated retired staff members have continued to contribute significantly to the school community or have been advocates for the school (after retirement) or have brought distinction to the school. Nomination forms may be downloaded from the Hinsdale South Foundation Website at http://south.hinsdale86.org/foundation/index_files/frame.htm or may be received by mail by calling Mary Della Chiesa to request a form (630-986-8933). 

The deadline for nominations is June 1, 2008.

DISTRICT 86 BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SERVICES, 2008-2009

Hinsdale, IL – On Monday, May 5, 2008, the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Ms. Laurel Beasley O’Brien as Director of Student Services for Hinsdale Township High School District 86 for the 2008-2009 school year. 

Ms. O’Brien brings a knowledge and understanding for the duties and leadership opportunities in the office of Director of Student Services.  Currently, she is serving St. Charles School District 303 as Assistant Director of Special Education Instructional Services and has held that position for the past 2½ years.  Prior to serving as Assistant Director, Ms. O’Brien served at the building level as Special Education Facilitator for four years.  Also, Ms. O’Brien served as Associate Attorney (Robbins, Schwartz, Nicholas, Lifton and Taylor) representing school districts in matters of school law.

Ms. O’Brien received her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Illinois University in Education, her Juris Doctorate at DePaul University College of Law, and most recently, her Educational Leadership degree at Aurora University. 

Ms. O’Brien completed an interview process with District Administration and building committee representation and clearly indicated through her experiences and academic preparation that she is prepared to take on the role of Director of Student Services.  “Her experience working in a district with two comprehensive high schools has prepared her for the dual high school district role with Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South.  Her understanding of emerging special education law, as well as practical instructional methodologies, is a foundation for her appointment as Director of Student Services,” said Mr. Dennis Brennan, President, Board of Education.  “We believe the appointment of Ms. Laurel Beasley O’Brien as Director of Student Services offers an opportunity for both campuses to work collaboratively, as well as more effectively, under her leadership.  Again, Ms. O’Brien brings a student-centered decision making approach to this appointment and displays the characteristics of working on an Administrative Team that is here to serve the District 86 students and constituents,” said Dr. Nicholas D. Wahl, Superintendent of Schools.

District 86 Vision and Strategic Planning Process Report … The ECRA Group will be reporting their findings on the District 86 Vision and Strategic Planning Process on Monday, May 5th, during the Committee of the Whole Meeting of the Board of Education.  The meeting will be held in the Community Room of Hinsdale Central High School and will begin at 7:00 p.m.; the ECRA presentation is expected to begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.  All District 86 constituents are invited to attend this meeting to hear ECRA’s final report on this important initiative.

Congratulations to the Student Council Executive Board for 2008-2009 … The following students were recently elected to lead the Hinsdale South Student Council for the 2008-2009 school year: Andi Della Chiesa, president; Ryan Mesina, vice-president; Julia Weigel, secretary; Joelle Farano, treasurer; Carly Hinni, publicity chair; and Lauren Dalicandro, board liaison.

Social Studies Department Recognizes 21 Students of the Quarter … Twenty-one students were honored by the Hinsdale South Social Studies Department for their work during the third quarter of the school year. Hinsdale South Foundation Sponsors Open Welcome Meeting… The Board of the Hinsdale South Foundation is inviting all incoming freshman parents, as well as alumni, community members and all interested parents, to attend an Open Welcome Meeting, on May 8 at 7 p.m. in the Black and Gold Room, to get to know each other and to learn more about the Foundation’s work on behalf of Hinsdale South. The Foundation sponsors rich educational opportunities for students and staff by providing grants, recognizing academic achievement, creating unforgettable experiences and connecting the present to the past. Some of the activities include the Father-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son Bowling Event, the Alumni Homecoming Gathering, the Hall of Fame, the Pathway to Excellence, the Academic Awards and provides many grants and scholarships. The Foundation meets once a month from August through June, and membership is free and open to alumni, parents, and community members. Parents will discover twists to common parenting skills and see how they have more in common with their teens than they might first believe. Mike Smith will spend a quick energetic hour looking at the world of high school while highlighting ways to encourage teens to live every day on purpose. Mr. Smith, from DifferenceMakers.com based in New Mexico, has earned the reputation of being able to pack a great deal of "learning" into a short amount of time. DISTRICT 86 BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTS A NEW PRINCIPAL FOR HINSDALE SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL, 2008-2009

Hinsdale, IL – On Monday, April 21, 2008, the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Mr. Brian Waterman, Assistant Principal of Glenbard North High School, as the next Principal of Hinsdale South High School for the 2008-2009 school year. 

Mr. Waterman will succeed Dr. Claudia Geocaris, who has served as the Hinsdale South Principal for the last seven years.  In March 2008, she was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for Hinsdale Township High School District 86, for the 2008-2009 school year.

Mr. Waterman brings an energy and excitement to this position, having served most recently as the Assistant Principal for Operations at Glenbard North High School, Glenbard Township High School District 87.  In this role, Mr. Waterman was responsible for developing the master schedule for the campus, as well the successful implementation of a student data management system for Glenbard North High School.  His leadership in technology integration for the building, as well as oversight for building security and safety, have been some of the primary responsibilities of Mr. Waterman as Assistant Principal at Glenbard North High School. 

Mr. Waterman received his Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Illinois University in Business Education and his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Eastern Illinois University, as well.  He also received a Master of Science from North Central College in Educational Leadership and is expected to confer his Doctorate in Leadership and Administration at Aurora University in May 2009.

DISTRICT 86 BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES, 2008-2009

Hinsdale, IL – On Monday, April 21, 2008, the Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of Mr. Troy Courtney as Director of Human Resources for Hinsdale Township High School District 86 for the 2008-2009 school year. 

Mr. Courtney brings a knowledge of District 86 to this position, as well as twenty years’ experience in the private sector as a business man.  Currently, Mr. Courtney is a Math Teacher at Hinsdale South and Local President of the Hinsdale High School Teacher’s Association.  His continued interactions as the Association leader have provided him opportunities to interact with teachers, as well as Administration, and have proved to be a positive experience for his candidacy for Director of Human Resources.  His twenty years’ experience in business have afforded him opportunities to supervise staff, to work on customer relations, and to build a repertoire of skills that match the challenges and rewards of Director of Human Resources position. 

Mr. Courtney received his Bachelor of Science degree from DePaul University in Computer Science, and his Masters of Arts in Teaching from Aurora University.  Most recently, Mr. Courtney completed his Type 75 requirements at Aurora University to prepare him for the position of Director of Human Resources. 

“Mr. Courtney’s experience and skill set developed in the private sector in sales seem well matched to the position of Director of Human Resources.  His knowledge of the District, having served as a teacher for the past seven years and Association President for the last two, embraces the continued excellence that we know in District 86,” said Mr. Dennis Brennan, President, Board of Education.  “We believe the appointment of Mr. Courtney will allow for the Human Resources Department of the Administrative Center to better meet the needs of all faculty and staff in District 86 as we continue to strive to improve our customer relations and service to all of our employees and constituents in District 86,” said Dr. Nicholas D. Service Academy Appointment… Congratulations to Hinsdale South Senior Matthew Koltis, who has been notified that he has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy!!!!!

Yard Sign Pick Up… ATTENTION ALL SENIOR PARENTS who ordered Graduation Yard Signs...Graduation Yard Sign pick up is on Tuesday, May 20th from 3:00 to 6:00 outside the cafeteria (pull right up by the outside door of cafeteria, you do not have to enter the building). For your convenience, your child may pick up the sign right after school. Thank you for your order and support of the Post Prom committee.

Business Professionals of American Qualify Five Students for Nationals… Business Professionals of America (BPA) held the Illinois State Conference in March, and five Hinsdale South students qualified at that event to move on to the BPA National Competition, beginning May 7. Congratulations  to the following students for their outstanding performances in their respective events at the state conference: Greg Blachut in C++ Programming; Renata Blachut, Integrated Office Applications; Kenny Castaneda, Advanced Accounting; Ryan McNally, Fundamental Accounting; and Omar Farooq in Legal office Applications. Scholastic Bowl Team Wins Regional Competition… Congratulations to the Hinsdale South Scholastic Bowl Team for winning its Regional competition and taking 2nd place at Sectionals!! Top performers for the team ere Greg Blachut, Karti Mital, Keith Janson, Omar Farooq, Michael Lim, Matt Fix, and Glen Janson. The team is coached by Mr. Paul Faeh and Mr. Zak Knott.

13th Annual 24-Hour Relay Challenge – May 17 - 18… District 86 is sponsoring the 13th annual 24-Hour Relay Challenge Saturday and Sunday, May 17 – 18 at Hinsdale Central. The purpose of the Challenge is to generate community spirit as well as raise funds to be distributed in the form of mini-grants to the Hinsdale Humane Society, Willowbrook Resource Center, Hinsdale Community Service, Darien Safety Village, and PADS. Up to 500 individuals, split into teams of 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12, will run or walk around the school’s outdoor track in relay fashion, one mile at a time for 24 hours. Fee for a team of 8 – 10 people is $500; a team of 11 will pay a fee of $550, and the fee for a team of 12 will be $600. The goal for this year’s Summer Registration and Book Distribution (the term book month is being retired) process is to be much more efficient and user friendly. Special Message from the Governor’s Office 

Governor Blagojevich has ordered flags at all State of Illinois buildings to fly at half staff from sunrise Tuesday, April 15, 2008, to sunset Thursday, April 17, 2008, to honor Army Pfc. Shane D. Penley of Sauk Village, Ill.

Army Pfc. Penley, 19, died Sunday, April 6, at Patrol Base Copper, Iraq, from wounds suffered while on duty at a guard post. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

This information is shared with Illinois schools at the request of the Regional Offices of Education and local school districts. Flying flags at school buildings at half staff is entirely at the discretion of the local administration.

The Library is Online All the Time!…The Hinsdale South Library is now blogging! We have an interactive site on which students and staff are encouraged to send us their comments. It has proven to be a great communication tool. We are able to inform our students when we have a schedule change, and to post information about our new books. A book discussion has begun about one of our most popular books, Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. “What Do You Do With a Kid Who Can’t Deal With Anger?”… The Downers Grove Township Division of Human Services is offering its popular “M.A.S.K. (Managing Anger Skills),” educational program in three six-week sessions in 2008. The program is designed to teach young people the skills needed to identify and manage their anger. All classes are held on Tuesdays beginning at 7 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 5211 Carpenter St. in Downers Grove. Sessions are February 12 through March 18; May 20 through June 24; and September 9 through October 14. For further information please contact Lori Wrzesinski at (630) 968-6408.
