SCHOOL PROFILE 2007-2008

Community

Primarily a middle and upper middle class residential suburban area, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Chicago in DuPage County, with some professional, business, and light industrial enterprises.  Serving residents of Burr Ridge, Darien, Willowbrook and adjacent areas.

School

One of two 4-year comprehensive high schools in Hinsdale School District 86.  Enrollment at South is approximately 1,890 students with 494 seniors in the class of 2008.  Over 99% of South’s students complete high school with 64% of the class of 2007 planning on attending a four-year school, 33% continuing at two-year colleges and 3% entering other opportunities.  Hinsdale South is a member of the North Central Association, the College Board, and both NACAC and IACAC.  The average per pupil operating cost in 2006-2007 was $14,130.

School Organization

The school year consists of four quarters, each nine weeks long.  Class periods are 50 minutes in length.  The first semester ends on January 17, 2008 and the second semester ends on June 4, 2008.

Faculty

Of the 184 certified faculty members, 164 hold a Masters Degree and 3 hold Doctorates.  Thirty-three percent of the faculty has more than 16 years of experience in education.

Extracurricular Activities

Hinsdale South offers numerous extracurricular programs enabling students to expand their academic and social skills, develop friendships and participate in wholesome activities.  Students can choose to participate in twenty nine sports available to young men and women.  Records indicate that throughout their four years, over 85% of our graduates have taken part in the more than sixty organizations available to all students.

 

 

Credits

A half credit is earned by taking a subject for at least 50 minutes a day, 5 days a week for one semester (90 days).  All students are required to carry a minimum of six credit earning courses per year.  A six-week summer session is offered for academic credit.

Student Services

A comprehensive program of student services is provided.  Eight guidance professionals assist students with personal, social, and academic concerns, college selection, and career plans.  Complementing the counselors are four social workers, two school psychologists and an Educational Services program that provides a full range of services for students who have been determined to be in need of special education programming.
