Horatio Alger Scholarship

Applicant must be a full time high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of 2007 with plans to enter a college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation.  Applicant must be intending to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited institution, critical financial need (preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family), involvement in co-curricular and community service activities, minimum grade point average GPA of 2.0 and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Students must reside in the US or attend a Dept. of Defense or Dept. of State school.  Students must submit an online application at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.

Golden Apple Scholar Program

Students in the class of 2008 interested in a career in teaching should see their counselor for information on the Golden Apple Scholar program.  This program recruits talented high school students who want to become teachers.  Recipients receive a scholarship and unique training opportunities in exchange for committing to teach at an Illinois school of need for 5 years.  See your counselor or http://www.goldenapple.org/scholars.htm for more information.

Illinois Junior Science and Humanities Symposium

Illinois Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (IJSHS) encourages high school students to participate in research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics and provides an opportunity to publicly recognize students for outstanding achievement.
☞ Are you a student in grades 9–12?
☞ Have you conducted original research in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics?
☞ Would you like to earn up to $17,500 in scholarship money?
☞ Do you enjoy hands-on science activities in research labs?
☞ Do you enjoy meeting students who enjoy science?

DECEMBER 1
SAE Engineering Scholarship (Undesignated Scholarship)

All applicants must be a high school senior at the date of application (Sept. 1 - Dec. 1), intend to earn a degree in engineering or a related science, be a citizen of the United States at the time of application and meet minimum requirements with regard to grade point average, SAT I Reasoning Test and/or ACT scores as outlined in the individual requirements of each scholarship.  Undesignated scholarships are paid directly to the college or university.  All scholarships are contingent upon the applicant's enrollment in engineering and acceptance from their chosen college or university.  To qualify, the applicant must enroll in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology at a university of the applicant's choice.  More information is available at http://students.sae.org/awdscholar/scholarships/.

Lincolnland Legends Program (Illinois Dollars for Scholars)

The Lincolnland Legends Program has several goals:• Provide an opportunity to win a scholarship• Honor a person who has inspired and motivated students who was born in, lived in, or is currently living in the student’s Congressional District• Provide an opportunity for Illinois students to identify Illinois citizens who have made significant contributions to society and who serve as role models and inspirational figures for youth• Develop an appreciation for outstanding Illinoisans who have overcome life obstacles and/or accomplished significant goals• Create and instill a sense of pride in being from Illinois• Provide an interesting, fun and motivating educational activity for students and teachers• Provide $67,000 in scholarships to college-bound Illinois students.

Nominations must be 500 to 600 words typed in essay form, and will be judged on the demonstration of the nominee’s connection to Illinois, the description of the nominee’s accomplishment in education and the community, the description of what the nominee has done to warrant admiration, and the overall persuasiveness and inspirational value of the essay by a panel of judges whose decision will be final.1. Review the nomination form2. Make copies and distribute forms to your students. Invite them to think about someone from their hometown or community who inspires them and has made a significant contribution to the field of education and the community. The nominee must be living and a current or past resident of the student’s Congressional District in Illinois.3. Ron Brown Scholar Program 

The Ron Brown Scholar Program will begin accepting applications for the 2007 scholarship competition as of September 1, 2006.  To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, Black or African American and current high school seniors.  Applications are available on-line at www.ronbrown.org.

American Planning Association Essay Contest

McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship

Scholarships are given to students who demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit while in high school.  To qualify a student must:

  • Graduate from high school
  • Attend a 4 year college or university
  • Own and operate a genuine business, non-profits are eligible
  • Have at least one employee, even if part time
  • Complete the online application by January 15

Discover Card Tribute Scholarship
Who is Eligible for the Tribute scholarship?
Any current high school junior who meets the following qualifications is eligible:
  • Is enrolled in an accredited public or private high school in the United States
  • Has at least 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale for the 9th and 10th grades
  • Demonstrates accomplishments in Leadership and Community Service and has faced a significant roadblock or challenge.

Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition

Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents (holding a Green Card) of the United States and enrolled in and currently attending high school in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa or the Mariana Islands. Home schooled students, who reside in the countries listed above, are also eligible. Only one project per student will be accepted. To enter the competition, you must register online and upload a written report of your research project. In order for students to be eligible for the U.S. Bank Internet Scholarship Program, the following is required:

  • A United States citizen or permanent resident alien;
  • A high school senior planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two- or four-year college or university;
  • Enrolled and accepted in an accredited two- or four-year college or university;
  • Enrolled by September 2007 in a full-time course of study at an accredited school.

KeyBank Take Five Scholarship

Children of Veterans Tuition Waiver at the University of Illinois

The Children of Veterans Tuition Waiver is a four-year consecutive in-state tuition waiver at the University of Illinois given to natural or legally adopted children of service members who were veterans of World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, the Southwest Asia Conflict, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Paul D. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is designed for students pursuing college majors and careers in the
environmental fields. Applicants wishing to be considered for this scholarship must
possess a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A., provide details of their academic achievement and an
outline of their participation in extracurricular activities, and write a 350 word essay on

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

MCSF's mission is to provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships for higher education to deserving sons and daughters of Marines and children of former Marines, with particular attention being given to children whose parent was killed or wounded in action. Illinois Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans

A $1,000 scholarship is being offered by the SVC/MOS&B.  Eligible students must be a descendent of a male who served honorably in the Army, Navy, Judicial, executive, or civil service of the Confederate States of America.  Family lines must be documented genealogically.  Submit application, essay and required documentation to state chair James F. Willowbrook-Burr Ridge Chamber of Commerce Scholarship

Minimum requirements:

  • 3.9 GPA
  • Attended HSHS all four years of high school
  • Display character, leadership, citizenship and service

Dupage County 4-H Scholarship

Applicants must have been a member of the Dupage County 4-H for a mininmum of 4 years; submit an application and two letters of recommendation; and be interviewed by the scholarship committee.  Application forms are available from the University of Illinois Extension Dupage County Office 310 South County Farm Road, Suite C, Wheaton, IL 60187.  You can call the extension office at 653-4114 with questions or for more information.

BP is offering $2,000 scholarships for promising high school students that:

  • reside in Northern Illinois, Chicago or Northwest Indiana
  • plan on entering a 2- or 4- year college as a full time student

Black Tie Formalwear Essay Contest

Black tie will award 10 $500 scholarships.  Students are asked to register at www.blacktietuxes.com and write a two page essay.  The essay topic is: "what is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given, and how do you apply it in your life today?"  See their flyer for more information.

Faithful Circle Quilters Founders Scholarship

A $1,000 scholarship is available to students working in, or interested in, textile art.  Applicants must complete an application form, and submit a letter of recommendation.  See the scholarship binder in the guidance office to obtain an application.

Illinois Lumber and Materials Dealers Association Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to students interested in pursuing industry related coursework at a college or university. Any student enrolled full time at an accredited post-secondary institution interested in the lumber and building materials field may apply. Student-View Scholarship Program

Seniors can log on to www.student-view.com and complete at 20 minute survey about colleges in the area to qualify.  Scholarships are awarded via a random drawing.

Fraternal Order of Police Westmont Lodge No. 63

Only students that reside within the corporate limits of the Village of Westmont are eligible for this award.  The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #63 will be awarding three $1,000 scholarships.  Students may obtain an application from the scholarship binder in the guidance office.

The Jim Wheelock Memorial Scholarship

Hinsdale South seniors may apply for the Jim Wheelock Memorial Scholarship.  This award is provided through the Hinsdale South Foundation.  Students must meet the following criteria:

  • students must have a connection to Hornet athletics (participant, manager, fan)
  • Students must demonstrate a significant contribution to HSHS in or out of the classroom
  • Student must exhibit the qualities of school spirit and leadership
  • the student must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 5.0 scale

Interested students should complete an essay documenting the above requirements and submit it with a resume to Mr. Palmasani by April 27.

Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago Scholarship

All applicants must meet the following qualifications in order to be considered for an award:

·         Applicants must reside in one of the following counties of Illinois:
Adams, Brown, Calhoun, Cass, Champaign, Christian, Clark, Coles, Cook, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, DuPage, Edgar, Ford, Greene, Grundy, Hancock, Iroquois, Jersey, Kane, Kankakee, Lake, Livingston, Logan, McLean, Macon, Macoupin, Mason, Menard, Mercer, Montgomery, Morgan, Moultrie, Piatt, Pike, Rock Island, Sangamon, Schuyler, Scott, Shelby, Tazewell, Vermilion, Will, Woodford.

·         Applicants must be able to provide proof of acceptance in a post-secondary educational or other vocational training program

·         Applicants must have a diagnosis of epilepsy (seizure disorder).

We must receive the applicant's complete application by April 28.

Dupage Medical Society Foundation

To be eligible for the Dupage Medical Society Foundation scholarship, applicants must meet the following guidlines: 1. voting resident of Dupage County, IL; 2. enrolled or accepted for admission to professional training in a health care field; 3. demonstrate financial need.  Students in undergraduate "pre-med" programs are NOT eligible.  Students entering professional education or training in a health care field directly after high school should apply.  More info and an application are available in the scholarship binder in the guidance office or at http://www.dcmsdocs.org/webpages/foundation.asp.

Congressional Black Caucus Scholarship

Eleanor L. Swartz Scholarship Fund

Up to two students from Hinsdale South can receive this $2,000 award.  Applicants must be high school seniors in District 86 to be eligible to apply.  Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal.  See the scholarship binder for more information.

Educational Communications Scholarship Foundation

This Foundation awards individual scholarships of up to $6,000.  Last year, the ECI Scholarship Foundation, a not-for-profit organization funded substantially by the publishers of Who's Who Among American High School Students, awarded over $200,000 in scholarships.

Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation

The Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation will award more than $250,000 in scholarships to students pursuing postsecondary education in the foodservice and/or hospitality management industry. All permanent residents of Illinois majoring in the disciplines above are eligible to apply.

Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship

Ten $2,500 scholarships will be awarded annually to Illinois high school seniors who plan to pursue a college degree and career in agriculture or an agriculture-related field. Scholarship recipients are selected by a panel of Illinois agriculture agency representatives. Winners are notified in writing by the Treasurer's Office prior to May 30 and will be honored at the Illinois State Fair.

Scholarship Criteria
Applicants must be:

  • A high school senior with a minimum 2.75 GPA
  • A resident of Illinois
  • Accepted at an accredited higher education institution in Illinois by May 15
  • Pursuing an agriculture or agriculture-related major

Northwest Human Resources Council Scholarship

The NHRC offers several $1,000 scholarships to high school students; and one $1,000 scholarship to a current college junior or senior majoring in Human Resources or a related field. Scholarship winners are chosen from applications received based on merit by a Scholarship Committee appointed by the Board of Directors of the Northwest Human Resources Council. The award decision of the Committee is final.

If a student's parent is employed by a NWHRC member company located in the Chicago suburban area, the student is eligible to apply. See www.mynhrc.org for a list of companies and to obtain an application.

Nordstrom Scholarship Program

To be eligible, students must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale, made a substantial contribution to their community, be involved in school activities, and demonstrate financial need.  Copies of the application are available in the scholarship binder in the counseling office.
