3/16  Vision Mission Committee Meeting, 7:15 Upper Library

Present: Kerin Sancken, Candy Butler, Cherie Kerzee-Stames, Susan Camasta

1) We began with a discussion of tardy tracking. How big of a problem is this?  Is it the biggest issue before 1st hour and during Lunch? Do tardy students cause more noise in the hallway during lunches?   We discussed inconsistent enforcement and different definitions of what teachers consider “tardy”.

We looked at TAC attendance.  If you mark tardies, you can change the color of the calendar record and then keep track of tardies.  Some people might find this useful for tracking student tardies.   Should there be a consistent tardy policy?  We used to have one (send students to SC to get a detention for all tardies!).  Did music in the hallways help kids get to class on time?

We couldn’t reach a consensus on how important an issue this is….we will look at the data from marking tardies, at our next meeting.  Hopefully there will be more people present so we have more opinions.

2) Claudia’s Student Leadership group was discussed, briefly.  Kids have met and are talking about their concerns.  They met with Sharon HB, came up with a list of issues concerning the school. How do their concerns compare with ours?

3) No Hate week…is there a way this committee can fit into the week?

Cherie told us a bit about what was planned for the week

Encourage people to do murals on canvas or poster, clubs especially.

4) Back to our table of things we could do to improve the climate at South. We thought these would be easy and visible things to do.

-Flags of cultures in cafeteria, (Glenbard N has some) and/or each class design a flag,

-Name the hallways…identify our values and promote them.

-Murals

-Paint hallway walls and lockers

-Streamline and organize our existing programs so we’re more efficient, we have a focus and people see overall goals and how we will get there. Hornet Habits , Hornet 101 (freshman)…who does what?  Character Counts? What do we have from year to year?  This could connect with hallway of respect, tolerance, etc…don’t just slot these programs into 1 month, 1 class. Change focus from year to year. Coordinate.  (Highland Park model?)  World Studies could connect with this? What other classes?  Weave into curriculum

The plan for next meeting  will be to begin a letter to Claudia with specific recommendations, maybe “how-to’s”  maybe even a ‘timeline”….
