Present at today’s after school meeting in the Upper Library: Yvonne, Carrie, Candy, Rick T., Kerin, Janet, Susan and Paul, Cherie, Reed.
During this meeting lack of communication in the building was a discussion point; some said rumors are a problem. We spent most of our time discussing out of classroom interactions between students and students, and students and staff such as those listed below. Members of the committee seemed to feel this is a problem to be addressed at Hinsdale South.
Out of classroom interactions to address
Hallway behavior (students not staff!)
Safety of students and staff
Respect of students for each other, staff and the building, itself.
Students in the halls during lunch…noisy, unaccounted for.
(Lunch periods used to be assigned by building area and it was quieter in the hallways during lunch. 5/7 was noted as especially a problem.
Discussion points; possible solutions to deteriorating atmosphere in
hallways and other comments.
Ø Advice to each other: Be fair and don’t show weakness….
Ø Do we need a tardy policy?
Ø Have something going on in the morning…movie, field house open for games?
Ø Kicking kids out of the building at 3;15 is unwelcoming
Ø A month of everybody being on the same page…..might solve various, chosen problems that we have.
Ø At Lemont H.S. Candy reported that students have an Assignment notebook with passes Teacher signs if kid leaves the class
Ø Whitman has a “sign the book if you are late” in the front of her classroom.
Ø
Classroom issue?
Recommendation to pay closer attention to scheduling of students. A recent fight that broke out was catalyzed by at risk students traveling from class to class in a group, interacting with another “troubled” group scheduled in a classroom near by.
For homework!
Everyone look up one thing that address school climate
(you can use teacher resources in library.)
In building, in hallway…look for things other schools
do that may help to improve our climate.
