Hinsdale South Update – Friday, November 14th, 2008

Hinsdale South Community:

On Thursday, November 20th, Hinsdale South High School inducted two members into the Hinsdale South Hall of Fame.  United States Air Force Colonel Don Palandech (Class of 1975) and NFL Wide Receiver Kevin Kasper (Class of 1996) were inducted into the Hall of Fame in front of an all-school assembly.  Both inductees provided the students with great words of wisdom, and it is our hope that the current students at Hinsdale South will look to both of them as shining examples of all that is possible after attending Hinsdale South High School!

I invite all parents to speak with your students about the Hall of Fame experience.  In addition, I encourage you to applaud your student for their outstanding behavior at the assembly!  The entire student body was attentive and respectful throughout the ceremony.

The next Hinsdale South Update will be sent on Friday, December 5th.

I wish all families a relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving Day Weekend!

Brian P. Waterman, Principal

Appointments must be made in advance and scheduled through Andrea Smith at asmith@hinsdale86.org.  The child care will take place in Room 111.

Music Department

The Hinsdale South Music Department will present their annual Madrigal Feast on Friday and Saturday, December 5 and 6.  It is an evening filled with wonderful singing, great music, festive costumes, lots of laughs, and delicious food. It all takes place in our West Cafeteria.  Our cafeteria is transformed into a lovely banquet hall, and the atmosphere created by our tech crew is something to behold.

The performers for the Madrigal Feast are the HSHS Madrigal Singers and the Monday Night Ensemble. There will also be a recorder ensemble, two Court Jesters, and many more surprises.  It is definitely a fun evening – for the entire family. For ticket information, contact Brett Goad at 630-468-4580. Get your tickets now!!

Parent Volunteers Needed

Hinsdale South is currently in the process of implementing the state-mandated Response to Intervention (RtI) model.  The purpose of RtI is to develop additional interventions for students who are struggling to succeed in the areas of reading, math, and behavior.  These interventions will be developed to help all Hinsdale South students be successful.  We will see if students successfully respond to the interventions we put in place and monitor students to ensure their success.   We have formed three committees comprised of teachers and administrators to begin the process of determining which students need extra interventions and what those interventions will look like. These three committees are for READING IMPROVEMENT, MATH IMPROVEMENT, and BEHAVIOR IMPROVEMENT.  We would very much like to have parents involved in these committees as well.  If you would be interested in serving on one of these committees, please contact Arwen Pokorny, Assistant Principal, at apokorny@hinsdale86.org or at 630.468.4213.

Food Drive

The Hinsdale South Food Drive is an annual school event that started over 20 years ago.  The goal each year is to collect 20,000 pounds of food.   The sponsors of this great community service project are Key Club and NHS.  The food is donated to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Our Lady of Peace and the Hinsdale Community Center.   Please encourage your child to listen to the announcements in order to find out ways in which they can participate in this worthwhile experience!

Hinsdale South Foundation Book Fair (Barnes & Noble)

The Hinsdale South Foundation, in conjunction with Barnes & Noble, is sponsoring a Book Fair on Wednesday, December 3rd from 10:00am – 9:00pm at Barnes & Noble Bookstore at 1550 W. 7th St. in Downers Grove.  Games, prizes, and story hours are just part of the fun!  Come for coffee and come to shop!  A percentage of your Barnes & Noble purchases will benefit the Hinsdale South Foundation.
