 Principal's Message
Hinsdale South Community -
Happy 4th of July, Hornet Nation!

We have been busy here at South during the month of June, and we look forward to a great month of activity in July.

Summer school has been a success, with South and Central students learning side by side. Over 430 students took classes first semester, and we look forward to hosting around 200 students. The last day for second semester summer school registration is Tuesday, July 1.  Please use  for further information.

Over 825 athletes from our community have been participating in Hornet Athletic Summer Camps, which began June 19th.  Hornet Nation is proud of the camp experience provided - we truly believe in the atmosphere that promotes the development of skills while allowing students to learn independence, decision making & values necessary for a well-rounded athlete, under the supervision of positive adult role models.  A big thank you to our dedicated coaches, alumni, current student-athletes community youth, that spend time in the summer developing sportsmanship and Hornets values! Go Hornets!

I have moved in to my new office, and I look forward to getting to know you as we partner to maximize the success of our students at South.  Please stop by and introduce yourself.  If you would like to make an appointment to come in and talk to me in person this summer, just email or call.  Thank you!

Highlights from the Summer Games include:

Track and Field – led by Coaches Joe Defalco, Tom Rocco, Courtney Hanrahan and Kathy Craig

For the first time in Hornet history, a student participated in the Pentathlon.  Jorge Huerta clinched the gold medal by over 50 points from the nearest competitor.  Huerta set personal bests in each of the five categories: 400-meter run, 200-meter run, long jump, high jump and shot put.

Jose Ugalde took first place in both the 400-meter run and the long jump. Jantha Laemmer took first place in the 200-meter run and placed third in the long jump.  Ja’Launi Collins took second place in the shot put competition and fourth place in the 200-meter run.  Cori Lesnik placed fifth in the 200-meter run and sixth place in the softball throw competition. Kittiya Laemmer placed fourth in the 200-meter run and seventh in the shot put competition.

Swimming – led by Coaches Anne Kairis and Joanne Betke

For the team relay, Mattie Kotlowitz, Ryan Donovan, Nelly Polanco and Juan Carrera took second place in the 4 x 25-meter freestyle event.  In individual competition, for the 25-meter backstroke Mattie Kotlowitz took second place, Ruben Lara placed sixth and Ryan Donovan placed seventh. In the 50-meter freestyle event, Juan Carrera took first place and Mattie Kotlowitz took second.

“We had so many great accomplishments this year,” said Special Olympics Coach Kathy Craig.  “These students are true athletes. They give it their all and their hard work always pays off. Each athlete improved in time and performance from the regional to the state meet. Their effort really shows.  We are all so proud.”
