 Principal's Message

Hinsdale South Community -

On Monday, March 17, the District #86 Board of Education voted unanimously to approve Friday, June 6 as the final day of the 2013-14 school year for freshman, sophomore, and junior students. To maximize instructional time, the Administrative Leadership Team has developed a plan and schedule in which the final three days of the school year (originally scheduled as final exam days) will be full days of instruction. To assess student understanding of coursework, Hinsdale South High School students will participate in a culminating experience in their courses between May 28, 2014 and June 5, 2014. Students will be notified in class no later than May 16 as to what these experiences will entail and the dates they will occur. Teachers will continue instruction through June 6, 2014, regardless of when the culminating experience is scheduled.

ü    May 28, 29, and 30—English, World Languages, Health, Art

ü    June 2 & 3—Social Studies, FACS, Tech. Ed., Science, Special Education, Deaf/Hard of Hearing

ü    June 4 & 5—Math, Business, Music

Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s individual teachers if you have any questions regarding the end of the year activities in a particular course.

In addition, please note that all juniors will take the Prairie State Achievement Exam on Wednesday, April 23 and Thursday, April 24.  On Wednesday, April 23, Hinsdale South will be operating on an early release schedule (12:45p) for all students.  On Thursday, April 24, Hinsdale South will operate on a normal dismissal schedule (3:00pm) for all students.  We wish our junior students the best of luck as they participate in this important state-wide assessment.

Please remember that Friday, April 18 is a non-attendance day for students.  We wish everyone a relaxing and restful three-day weekend!

Competes in State Economics Competition

Hinsdale South High School participated in the 2014 Illinois Economics Challenge State Finals, a program of Econ Illinois.  The event, held April 10 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, involved 40 high school students competing for the Championship title.

The championship event consisted of written individual and team tests as well as a quiz bowl round of competition.  This year, 394 students participated in the online round of competition in March, with 10 teams qualifying for the state event.  Hinsdale South qualified four students for the state level competition: Cassie Jensen, Lai Jiang, Greg Murray, and Apurva Jolepalem.  Their coach is AP Economics teacher Jeff Waterman.  This is the fifth year in a row that Hinsdale South has qualified at least one team for the state competition.

Hinsdale South’s team earned the highest score in Macroeconomics and had the second highest score for Microeconomics.  Murray won individual honors in Macroeconomics and Jiang won for Microeconomics.  Said Coach Jeff Waterman, “I’m very proud of these kids.  Their performance at this competition sets them apart as some of the best high school economics students in the state.”

The Illinois Economics Challenge (ILEC), a program of Econ Illinois, is a Money Smart Week event.  Partial funding is provided through BMO Harris with in-kind support provided by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

The Illinois Economics Challenge is designed to recognize Advanced Placement students who demonstrate high levels of comprehension and application of economics concepts and skills; and to reward their teachers for outstanding practices in teaching economics courses.

Congratulations to the Hinsdale South Economics Challenge Team!

Letter from District #86 Superintendent, Dr. Bruce Law

Dear Hinsdale Township High School District 86 Parents and Students:

Earlier this week, I wrote to inform you that at our regularly-scheduled meeting March 17, the Board of Education voted unanimously to keep Friday, June 6 as the last student attendance day for the 2013-2014 school year. The Board also directed District administrators and teachers to work together to determine a plan to make up as much as possible the four days of instructional time that we lost due to the extreme hard weather the region experienced this winter.

District and school administrators and representatives of the Hinsdale High School Teachers Association met and have worked out a solution that achieves the Board’s directives. The final three days of the 2013-2014 school year—June 4, 5 and 6—will be full attendance days for all students. Traditionally, these days have been partial attendance days devoted only to taking final exams.

Students will still have culminating exercises that allow them to demonstrate their mastery of course content, but embedding finals into regular instructional days will allow our teachers to explore new and innovative ways for students to demonstrate their mastery of course subject matter. We are excited to see the many ways our students’ learning outcomes can be demonstrated with this approach. Teachers will communicate the specific schedule to their students for the end of the year.

School administrators and faculty will work closely to coordinate due dates for exams, projects, performances, etc. to ensure that all students have an appropriate balance over the course of these three days.

The non-attendance days, late start and early dismissal days as published on the calendar have not changed.

On behalf of the District 86 Board and administration, I thank you for your support of our students and schools. If you have questions about this matter, please feel free to contact me at 630-655-6110 or

Hinsdale South High School has a long “tradition of excellence” that is a direct result of the outstanding “partnership in learning” that exists in Hornet Nation.   Recently, the efforts that our students and faculty/staff put in on a daily basis were nationally recognized through our inclusion on the list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools”, produced by the Washington Post.  The formula, as described by the Post, ranks schools on the number of Advanced Placement (AP) exams given, divided by the number of graduating students.  To that end, a ratio of 1.0 means that a school administered as many AP exams as graduating seniors.  Hinsdale South achieved an index of 3.005 according to the rankings.  In addition, HSHS achieved an overall ranking of #11 compared to all other schools in the state of Illinois.  At Hinsdale South, we firmly believe that ALL students should have access to a challenging and rigorous Advanced Placement curriculum, and the latest Washington Post academic recognition is a direct reflection of the building-wide philosophy that is evident at Hinsdale South.  I invite our parents and community to click on the link below to further explore the rankings, and to celebrate this great accomplishment.

10:00am Start Days - Revised Schedule
Hinsdale Twsp. High School District #86 places a high value on the professional development that is provided to our teachers and staff, and the impact that it has on student learning and academic performance. One example of the professional development that occurs throughout the school year is the inclusion of late starts for our students. During these late starts, our faculty participate in course team work, Response to Intervention (RtI) development, and technology training, among other activities. During 10:00am starts, all staff work on professional development activities from 7:30am-9:30am, then all students arrive for the start of the school day at 10:00am. Student dismissal on 10:00am start days is at 3:00pm (normal time). During the 2013-14 school year, the following dates have been designated as 10:00am starts:
May 7, 2014
Please mark your calendar and remind your student(s) of these 10:00am start dates.
